WE recognise the devastating effect that dementia can have on families. We know how important it is to help people to find the right advice and support at all
stages of the illness, which is why we’ve invested in a range of projects to improve people’s lives in Staffordshire.
The Limewood Dementia Centre opened in Stafford in January and provides specialist nursing, residential and respite care under one roof.
It has been built by a partnership of Staffordshire County Council, Choices Housing Association and The Wrekin Housing Trust.
As part of its specialist care for people with dementia it has a 1950s style ‘high street’ with a pub and beer garden, hairdressers and newsagents. There is even a cinema modelled on the original Stafford Picture House.
The next few years will also see building start on the new Dementia Centres of Excellence in Lichfield and East Staffordshire.
Five years ago the council made a commitment to improve the lives of people with all stages of dementia in Staffordshire. The new centres, which will replace three residential homes run by the council, will provide state of the art care, a safe and fulfilling home environment and support to the community where people are experiencing the early stages of dementia.
The multi-million pound project is being delivered by a partnership of the county council and a consortium called Symphony, made up of the Accord Group who are leaders in dementia care, Keepmoat builders and Quattro Architects.
Alongside the building of the new centres we are also looking at the demand for further centres in other parts of the county.
The Dementia Centres of Excellence will create a home-like environment, where groups of residents have their own rooms based around a living and kitchen area. This means that people will eat and live together in small, family-like groups, giving them the consistent support network that makes a real difference to people with dementia.
Residents will be able to hold family gathering and have pets, and enjoy a fulfilling life with the care and support they need.
