During winter Staffordshire County Council has 42 gritters that are on standby and ready to head out onto Staffordshire’s roads round the clock should they be required.
Staffordshire has the largest gritting network in the West Midlands covering 43 per cent of Staffordshire’s 6,000km of highways.
Often our gritters are driving around housing estates. It’s obviously not easy to drive such a large vehicle on small roads with parked cars, especially when it is fitted with a snow plough on the front.
When out on the roads our gritter drivers also have a number of controls and cameras to help them to navigate and grit the roads effectively. These controls help the drivers make sure that they are using the correct amount of grit and that it is spread evenly depending on the width of the road.
You can take a look for yourself what it is like driving a gritter in the above video with one of our gritter drivers, Darren Pinson, who gives us a quick guide.
You can get up to date information on when our gritter drivers will be out on the roads by following us on twitter or by visiting our winter information pages www.staffordshire.gov.uk/snow
We also have another interview with one of our gritting team members.
