The County Council is ready to throw down this year’s holiday reading gauntlet to Staffordshire’s youngsters.
The theme of 2014’s Summer Reading Challenge is ‘Mythical Maze’ challenging children aged 4 to 11 to find their way around a labyrinth that introduces them to fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology, collecting stickers of each character along the way.
Youngsters who sign up at their local library will be encouraged to read six books during their long school break, plot their progress on a special poster and receive a medal and certificate on completion.
Last year a record breaking 14,098 children across the county took part in the scheme with almost 9,000 completing – exceeding the previous year’s total by 820.
Staffordshire‘s Library Leader, County Councillor Mike Lawrence said the Summer Reading Challenge has proved to be incredibly popular with the county’s young people over the years.
“And we’re hoping to beat last year’s record breaking numbers,” Mike continued.
“It’s important to encourage our children to keep reading over the long summer break to avoid the ‘summer learning dip’.
“I’m sure this year’s myths and fantasy themed challenge will prove another fun way to help our children go back to school feeling really positive about learning. “
Every year Staffordshire Libraries are indebted to young volunteers from across the county who offer their free time to help deliver the reading and activitiy programme.
Last year 46 volunteers across Staffordshire came forward to help, providing invaluable support to both library staff and youngsters taking part.
The Summer Reading Challenge launches in libraries across Staffordshire on Saturday 12 July.
Children can sign up for the FREE challenge at their local library and will receive a free starter pack.
The Summer Reading Challenge, delivered by Staffordshire Libraries, is produced by The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to inspire people to read more, supported by children’s publishers.
