Welcome to your Winter issue of ‘My Staffordshire Extra’, our e-magazine bringing you all the latest news and happenings from across the county.
As always, we try to bring you the latest news and some great stories and videos of what we are doing to help improve the lives of people working, or living here in our great county.
Our first story is about our discovery of a rare letter written by a British Army General on Christmas Day 1914. In the letter by General Congreve VC, he talks about the Christmas Truce and the famous game of football that took place between the German and British soldiers. You can read all about this amazing find by our Archives Service on the Staffordshire Great War website or listen to the letter being read out by the Staffordshire Poet Laureate.
The cold weather has finally arrived and you’ll be pleased to know that our teams of gritters will be out and about across the county to keep the roads clear and people safe. If you are driving, please take care and remember to keep an eye on our Twitter account for our gritting alerts using the hashtag #StaffsGrit.
Tis’ the season to be merry and celebrate, but if you are driving then please remember the drink driving limits. We have included a sobering story about what devastation can be caused if you fail to limit your alcohol intake.
Christmas is a time of festive celebrations but not everyone will be fortunate enough to have family and friends around, so remember to check up on your elderly neighbours. You can also volunteer some of your time to help through the good neighbour scheme or through other volunteering opportunities here. We have also put together a list of organisations and charities offering support at this time of year.
If you are still hunting for that special gift , then check out our guide to local independent shops. Our Shop local campaign is reminding people to think about independent shops in their local town which are a great place to find unique gifts.
This is just a taste of what’s in this issue, there’s lots more, just browse through the stories and articles below. Remember, it’s also easy to share the articles and videos with your friends and colleagues using the share buttons at the bottom of every article or the big share buttons at the right hand side of every page. And, we also welcome your comments, which can be posted at the end of each article.
Use the comment box below or any of the many ways to contribute and have your say to let us know what you think.
